Patriots Daily: Who’s Playing?; Sam Howell Sack Record

Published

on

New England Patriots get ready to play the Washington Commanders this afternoon. The teams enter the game as 28 and 24 respectively in the latest NFL Power Rankings on PFN, so not necessarily the marquee matchup of Week 9. But it is an important game for both teams as they attempt to either head toward the top of the 2024 NFL Draft, or prove they plan to compete in 2023.

The inactive list for the Patriots is eagerly anticipated. Ten players are listed as questionable: DL Christian Barmore (knee), LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (knee), TE Pharaoh Brown (back), OT Trent Brown (ankle/knee), DT Davon Godchaux (illness), CB Jonathan Jones (knee), OT Vederian Lowe (ankle), WR Tyquan Thornton (foot), LB Josh Uche (ankle/toe), and DE Deatrich Wise (shoulder).

New England is hoping to help Commanders QB break a record. The NFL record for yards lost on sacks in a season is 489, set by Randall Cunningham of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1986. Through eight games in 2023, Sam Howell has lost 276 yards via sacks. This puts Howell on pace to lose 587 over the course of the season, shattering Cunningham’s record.

Fun Fact of the Day

New England Patriots are currently 2-6. Three teams have started 2-6 in NFL history (since the 1970 merger) and gone on to reach the NFL Playoffs: 1970 Cincinnati Bengals, 2020 Washington Football Team, and 2022 Jacksonville Jaguars.
