Patriots Daily: Ke’Shawn Vaughn Released; Four UDFAs Signed

The New England Patriots released veteran running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn yesterday. They signed four undrafted free agents as well, following their rookie minicamp. Following the transactions, the only open 90-man roster spots on the 90-man roster are for the five draft selections yet to sign
Ke’Shawn Vaughn was a third-round selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL Draft. This followed consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns at Vanderbilt to finish his college career. He remained with the Buccaneers until being waived on Dec. 15, 2023.
During his four seasons in Tampa Bay, Vaughn appeared in 43 games. He totaled 103 carries for 384 yards and two touchdowns. Vaughn also amassed 14 receptions for 41 yards and another score. He appeared in six games for Tampa Bay in 2023, picking up 42 yards on 24 carries. He was last active for an NFL game on Nov. 11.
Vaughn finished the 2023 season on New England’s practice squad, though did not appear in any games.
Undrafted Free Agents
New England signed four undrafted free agents yesterday. A look at the new members of the 90-man roster:
RB Terrell Jennings (Florida A&M) – At 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, Jennings has good size. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry in 2023 and scored 10 touchdowns. He finished his four-year career with 1,754 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. Jennings also happens to be a childhood friend of DeMario Douglas.
OL Ryan Johnson (Youngstown State) – The 6-foot-4, 315-pound guard began his college career at Duquesne before transferring to Youngstown State. Excellent size for a guard, with versatility to play along the offensive line. He was named All-MVC honorable mention in 2023. Played in 32 career college football games.
LB Jay Person (Chattanooga) – Person produced consistently for Chattanooga. The Southern Conference named him Defensive Player of the Year the past two seasons. Over the past three seasons, Person amassed 168 tackles (96 solo), 23.0 sacks, 46.5 tackles-for-loss, and seven forced fumbles. He was a college teammate of Patriots guard Cole Strange.
DE Jothan Russell (Australia/IPPP) – Russell is part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. As a result, he does not count towards the Patriots 90-man roster. Only 20 years old, Russell is a former rugby player. He stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 239 pounds, so he needs to bulk up to play defense in the NFL, though he could make an impression on special teams. New England had previous success through the IPPP with fullback Jakob Johnson.
Note: UDFA Jett Bush was previously reported as a Patriots signing. However, when the Patriots’ UDFA signings were officially announced, Bush was the lone name missing from the original report. He participated in rookie minicamp but has not signed with New England.

Football Fun Fact of the Day
Jotham Russell is one of four Australians from the IPPP to sign with NFL teams in 2024. There had been three before this year (the program began in 2017). The only player from Australia from the IPPP to play in the NFL is Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata.
