Cowboys’ rising superstar edge rusher deemed ‘ideal fit’ for Patriots

It’s no-doubt tempting for the New England Patriots to look at Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter and see multiple Pro Bowls for a team with a feared pass rush for the next several seasons. Carter just might be too good to escape the top 3. So for the Patriots, sitting at No. 4 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, a back-up plan might be in order.
Enter Cowboys edge rusher Chauncey Golston. The cash-strapped Cowboys are in line to dole out their third mega contract in a year, having extended quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in 2024, and Micah Parsons on deck in 2025. Like Dante Fowler, it might simply be a player the Cowboys can’t afford.

And his availability should absolutely interest the Patriots, with or without the possibility of selecting Carter. At least that’s the mindset of 33rd Team analyst Marcus Mosher, who suggested the Patriots as one of the ideal landing spots for Golston.
“Golston is a long defensive end that is known of his power and ability to move all around the defensive line,” Mosher wrote. “While he is improving as a run defender, he made significant leaps as a pass rusher in 2024. . . . He’s just now learning how to play within his frame (6-5, 270) and could be a steal for his next team.”

While paying on the retail market might not be ideal, it’s often where teams in the rebuilding phase have to shop. And considering the Patriots have a league-high $100 million in estimated cap space for the 2025 season, they’ll need to spend this offseason, along with add to their future core through the draft.
The price tag might be team-friendly as well, considering Golston, while oozing with raw talent, won’t project to be a 15+ sacks a year kind of player. But he can continue to grow, as he has to this point in his career, and be an excellent compliment to the high-end edge rusher the Patriots should be pursuing in this draft and/or free agency.
