Former Patriots WR Deion Branch sees first major coaching promotion at Louisville

For the last several years, former New England Patriots great wide receiver Deion Branch has found himself back at his alma mater, Louisville, as a staff member with the football team. On Tuesday, Branch received a promotion, elevating him to the role of wide receivers coach under head coach Jeff Brohm, according to Jody Demling.
Branch has been with Louisville since 2022, serving as the Director of Player Development and Alumni Relations. He is set to replace former wide receivers coach Garrick McGee, who recently joined Bill Belichick’s staff at North Carolina. With the Cardinals looking to maintain their offensive success the last couple seasons, Brohm turned to Branch, a former standout player for the program, to take on a key coaching responsibility.
Before making his mark in coaching, Branch had an impressive 11-year NFL career, primarily with the New England Patriots, winning two Super Bowl titles. Over the course of 140 career games, Branch tallied 518 catches, 6,644 yards, and 39 touchdowns. He spent the first four seasons of his career with New England, earning a Super Bowl MVP award in Super Bowl XXXIX for his 11-catch, 133-yard performance in the victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Branch was later traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2006, before making a return to the Patriots in 2010 for the final years of his playing career. He also signed with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2014 playoffs.
Now, in his first major assistant coach role at Louisville, Branch will work to continue the development of the Cardinals’ receiving corps and help them build on their offensive successes under Brohm. With his understanding of both the college and professional game, Branch is poised to make a significant impact on the Cardinal’s future, as the team looks to compete for an ACC title and College Football Playoff berth.
Louisville will begin their 2025 regular season at home against Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 30.
