Patriots Daily: Trey Flowers Released; Chase Winovich Retires

New England Patriots Chase Winovich

The New England Patriots yesterday waived Malik Cunningham. But somewhat lost with that announcement was the release of another Patriots player: DE Trey Flowers. Since Flowers had started the season on the PUP list, the Patriots had a 21-day window to active or release him after he returned to practice. Flowers first day back at practice was October 4, which meant today was the deadline to make a decision on his status. Flowers played his first four years in New England (2015-2018) before leaving in free agency. He was a starting defensive end on two Super Bowl champions with the Patriots.

Also yesterday, former Patriot Chase Winovich announced his retirement from the NFL. He was a third round pick of the Patriots in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Michigan. After three seasons with the Patriots he was traded to the Cleveland Browns for LB Mack Wilson, Sr. Winovich played the 2022 season with the Browns. This season he was waived by the Texans out of camp, signed with the Dolphins practice squad, and was active for Miami’s win over New England earlier this season.

Winovich announced his retirement in a statement on Instagram. He said, ““It has been a wild 21 years playing football!!! The time has come for me to serve the universe in other ways.”

Plus Malik Cunningham, Josh Allen, Justyn Ross, Jabrill Peppers and more in today’s edition of Patriots Daily…

Fun Fact of the Day

NFL teams winning the turnover battle are much more likely to succeed, but not always. Three times in NFL history a team has had a turnover margin of +7 but still lost the game:

Oct. 15, 1961 – San Francisco 49ers 38, Minnesota Vikings 24
Sept. 24, 1967 – Green Bay Packers 13, Chicago Bears 10
Oct. 30, 1983 – Pittsburgh Steelers 17, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12
