New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo announced Friday that the team will have a new captain moving forward. Center David Andrews was placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season. Veteran tight end Hunter Henry will take Andrews’ place as one of New England’s team captains moving forward.

Henry served as one of the Patriots team captains in 2023. He was a surprised omission from the initial group of six named before the start of the season. The San Diego Chargers drafted the tight end in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Arkansas. He signed with New England as a free agent in 2021. The Patriots signed him to a three-year contract before he hit free agency this past offseason.

“He’s done a tremendous job since he’s been here, both on the field and off the field,” Mayo said of Henry.

Jerod Mayo went on to say of Hunter Henry, “The players offensively, defensively, and on special teams look up to a guy like that who’s played a lot of ball in this league.”

Hunter Hunter joins Kyle Dugger as an injury-replacement captain this season. Dugger took Ja’Whaun Bentley’s spot as a defensive captain when Bentley tore his pec in Week 2, landing him on injured reserve. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett, defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr., safety Jabrill Peppers, and long snapper Joe Cardona are the New England Patriots other four team captains.
