New England Patriots wide receiver Jalen Reagor

The New England Patriots freed up a second practice squad spot on Tuesday. The team announced the release of veteran Jalen Reagor. Reagor, a wide receiver and return specialist, joined the Patriots practice squad at the start of the 2023 season. New England promoted him to their 53-man roster on Oct. 26, 2023.

Jalen Reagor appeared in 11 games for New England last season. He caught only seven passes for 138 yards but excelled as a kickoff returner. Reagor averaged 31.6 yards on seven returns, including a 98-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff of the Patriots Week 17 game against the Buffalo Bills.

Reagor was a free agent this past offseason but returned to New England on a one-year deal. He played well in training camp and the preseason. He was projected here to make the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster. However, the team opted to have Marcus Jones and Antonio Gibson take over kickoff return duties. They kept six wide receivers on the roster: DeMario Douglas, Ja’Lynn Polk, K.J. Osborn, Tyquan Thornton, Javon Baker, and Kayshon Boutte. In addition, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne began the season on the PUP list. This left Jalen Reagor the odd man out.

Instagram Post

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Jalen Reagor posted a photo on Instagram showing a nice car next to a house that needed some work. It is unclear if Reagor was referring to himself as the luxury automobile in this scenario. It is also unclear if he knew about his release when the post was made.

Reagor joined the Patriots practice squad after being released during final cuts. It seems safe to assume that Reagor was no longer thrilled about his situation. He also may not have seen a path forward to playing time in New England, having lost his kickoff return duties and being eighth on the depth chart as a wide receiver. He will now get an opportunity to start fresh elsewhere.

The New England Patriots now have two open spots on their practice squad following Jalen Reagor’s release. That does not include any moves made involving injured linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, as nothing has been made official at this time.
