Patriots Daily: The Athletic Ranks Brissett 31 of 32 Starting QBs

New England Patritos quarterback Jacoby Brissett

There are a lot of preseason rankings leading up to the start of the NFL regular season. Jeff Howe of “The Athletic” recently made one such list. Howe ranked all 32 quarterbacks slated to start in Week 1 for their respective teams. New England Patriots QB1 Jacoby Brissett didn’t fare well in The Athletic’s rankings. Brissett placed only ahead of one other quarterback.

Jacoby Brissett looked great in 2023 in a limited sample size. He started no games for the Washington Commanders but appeared in three. He finished the season 18 of 23 passing, for 223 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Brissett last started for the 2022 Cleveland Browns, going 4-7 in 11 starts as starter Deshaun Watson served a suspension.

The only starting quarterback for Week 1 that Howe ranked below Brissett was Gardner Minshew of the Las Vegas Raiders. Minshew was the Indianapolis Colts starter last season after rookie Anthony Richardson was injured. Minshew led Indianapolis to a 7-6 record in his 13 starts, including a win over New England in Germany.

Joining them in the bottom quadrant of the rankings were quarterbacks 25-30, in order: Bryce Young (Panthers), Daniel Jones (Giants), Deshaun Watson  (Browns), Sam Darnold (Vikings), Bo Nix (Broncos), and Russell Wilson (Steelers). Not sure I agree with many of the rankings (i.e., Young being five spots above Wilson), but the beauty of it is that none of these preseason rankings will matter soon enough. It’s why they play the games.

Patriots Fact of the Day

Jacoby Brissett became the first Black QB to start a game for the New England Patriots on Sept. 22, 2016. The Patriots beat the Houston Texans 27-0 in the game. Cam Newton (15 games in 2020) is the only other Black quarterback to start for New England.

The New England Patriots will certainly be among the teams monitoring him closely between now and then.
