Patriots Daily: Bill O’Brien Wins BC Debut; Javon Baker’s Ticket
Bill O’Brien’s second stint with the New England Patriots wasn’t nearly as successful as his first. O’Brien coached in New England from 2007 to 2011. He was an offensive assistant on the 16-0 team that won the AFC Championship in his first year and the offensive coordinator on another AFC Championship squad in his final season. When he returned in 2023 after stints with Penn State, the Houston Texans, and Alabama, things did not go as smoothly. The 2024 season is off to a much better start for O’Brien.
After New England replaced head coach Bill Belichick and the entire offensive coaching staff after last season, O’Brien accepted the head coaching position at Boston College. He agreed originally to become Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, but the BC job opened up after their head coach, Jeff Hafley, left to become the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator. O’Brien’s Eagles played their first game of the season on Monday night. They walked off the field with a dominating 28-10 victory over No. 10 ranked Florida State.
O’Brien’s offense accumulated 369 total yards. The Eagles outrushed the Seminoles 263 yards to 21. After a stressful 2023 season in New England in which O’Brien faced challenges with staff, players, and performance, things are headed in the right direction at his new home.
Jerod Mayo Addresses Javon Baker’s Ticket
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo addressed the situation at Monday’s press conference. He said that Baker received a penalty, but did not elaborate on what the punishment was, or would be. Mayo said only it did not raise to the level of missing a game. He attempted to do some damage control by stating Baker’s comments, “In no way represents what the organization is about.”
Mayo added, “As far as our relationship with law enforcement, I think it’s outstanding, and we’ll continue to strengthen that relationship going forward.”
