New England Patriots Inactive Report for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Deshaun Fenwick

The New England Patriots created an open spot on their 90-man roster after releasing wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster last week. On Monday the team reportedly filled that spot by bringing a familiar face back to Foxboro. Rookie running back Deshaun Fenwick is re-signing with the Patriots.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was first to report the transaction.

Fenwick signed with New England as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. He was with the team through rookie minicamp, OTAs, and the beginning of training camp. The Patriots released Fenwick, along with OL Tyrone Wheatley Jr. on August 2 to make room for OL Kellen Diesch and DB A.J. Thomas.

Deshaun Fenwick began his collegiate career at South Carolina before transferring to Oregon State. He spent three seasons at each school. Fenwick fumbled zero times in 385 college carries. He has excellent size at 6-foot-1 and 233 pounds. Over the past two seasons with the Beavers he rushed for 1,068 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The New England Patriots return to having six running backs on the roster with the return of Deshaun Fenwick. He joins Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson, Kevin Harris, JaMycal Hasty, and Terrell Jennings.

Update: John Morgan III Released

Once the Patriots made the pickup of Deshaun Fenwick official, they announced that rookie UDFA John Morgan III had been released. Morgan played at Pitt before finishing with a final season at Arkansas. Morgan played in the preseason opener against Carolina and recorded a sack, among his two quarterback pressures. Morgan’s release leaves the New England Patriots with one open roster spot remaining on their 90-man roster, despite signing Fenwick.
