Patriots Daily: New England’s Awful Offense; Eagles Win Again

Published

on

New England Patriots quarterback hangs his head during Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints

After dropping a 10-7 game to the New York Giants yesterday, the New England Patriots record stands at 2-9. In order for Patriots fans to compare this year’s team to similarly awful squads from franchise history, the clock needs to be turned back at least 30 years. That means going back to a time prior to Robert Kraft owning the Patriots. Before 2023, Kraft had seen his team have more 11-0 starts to a season than 2-9 since purchasing the Patriots.

While it is difficult to define New England’s struggles with a single word, ‘offense’ is a good place to begin.

Through 11 games, the 2023 New England Patriots have scored 148 points. Not only is that the fewest in the NFL this season, it is by far the least amount during the Kraft years. It is 29 points fewer than the 1995 team, and over 70 points less than every year other than 1995 and 2000. For comparison’s sake, in Robert Kraft’s 30 years as an NFL owner, 11 Patriots teams had at least 300 points through the same number of games. Two of those teams had over 400. Even last year’s team had 239 points (not to mention six wins) through their first 11 games.

Meanwhile, the man largely scapegoated for the failures of last season’s squad was play caller Matt Patricia. Not that Patricia was a misunderstood offensive genius, but he has to be feeling a bit of vindication at the moment. He is now a senior defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles. Yesterday the Eagles (10-1) beat the Buffalo Bills in overtime to remain the only one-loss team in the NFL this year.

Fun Fact of the Day

Through 11 starts this season, Mac Jones has thrown 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The only other AFC East quarterbacks with as few touchdowns and as many interceptions through 11 games in the past 25 years were Jay Fiedler (2003 Miami Dolphins) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (2017 New York Jets).
