The New England Patriots brought in a group of five for a tryout yesterday. Those auditioning were:

QB Austin Burton (Purdue)
TE Michael Ezeike (UCLA)
DB Cameron McCutcheon (Western Carolina)
TE La’Michael Pettway (Iowa State)
TE Christian Sims (Bowling Green)

Austin Burton is a local product (Newton, Mass.) who played his college football at UCLA and Purdue. He is the son of Boston sportscaster Steve Burton (recently featured in a PFN Tweet of the Day). He was with the Patriots in training camp this year. Last season he was the backup for current Las Vegas Raiders starting QB Aidan O’Connell at Purdue. Four of the five participants were UDFA, eligible for the 2023 NFL Draft. The lone exception is La’Michael Pettway. The tight end was eligible for the 2019 draft and most recently helped the Birmingham Stallions win the 2023 USFL Championship.

New England currently has an open spot on the practice squad after waiving Will Grier last weekend, and promoting Conor McDermott.

Meanwhile, today we will get an update on the injury status of New England Patriots WR/PR Demario Douglas. Against the Giants on Sunday, Douglas was hit by a clothesline from the Giants’ Cam Brown. There was no penalty on the play, and no mention of the illegal hit by the braodcast team. Douglas left with a head injury and did not return to the game. Needless to say, New England could have used his services while trying to get a few points on the board.
