Patriots Daily: More Belichick Speculation; Assistants Safe?
New England Patriots rumors will continue to fly about the job security of their staff until something happens. One day after New England fell to 2-7 on the season, discussions about the job security of Bill Belichick and his coaching staff came from all directions.
Ben Volin of The Boston Globe claimed the Kraft family considers Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel the “home run choice” to be Bill Belichick‘s successor. An obvious problem here is that not only is Vrabel under contract with the Titans, but the Patriots still owe a lot of money to Belichick.
Volin’s article covered Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, Jerod Mayo, Bill O’Brien, Josh McDaniels, Nick Caserio, Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft. But despite all the names, there was not a lot of concrete thoughts. It was mostly possibilities that everyone is aware of, since everything is on the table. There is no guarantees about anything at this point, as this is uncharted territory for all involved. Although the Patriots were 2-7 under Belichick in 2000, it was his first year running the show in Foxboro. Times and dynamics have changed.
So, Volin did not necessarily generate much water cooler talk in New England, but it did lead to chatter in the New York Post and the like. Another distraction in a dismal season for a team desperately needing to avoid more of them.
Meanwhile ESPN’s Mike Reiss, while a guest on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich, said he believes Belichick would not fire any of the Patriots coaching staff during the season. This is good news for a few coaches with regularly struggling groups under their tutelage. The news that Belichick would not throw his coaching staff under the bus for the team’s struggles comes as no surprise. However, things will certainly get interesting if the Krafts attempt to force the issue.
From TOUCHER & RICH: @MikeReiss from ESPN doesn't believe the Krafts will make any in-season changes to Patriots coaching staff
