Patriots Daily: Ameer Speed Released; 20 Patriots on Injury Report

The New England Patriots released rookie cornerback Ameer Speed on Thursday. Speed was a a sixth round pick (214 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. A cornerback from Michigan State, he has been active for five games this season, appearing almost exclusively as a special teams player.

Ameer Speed’s release leaves the Patriots 53-man roster currently at 52, as no corresponding move was announced. It is possible one of the PUP or IR players coming back (ST Cody Davis, DL Trey Flowers, CB Jack Jones) could take Speed’s spot.

Yesterday was another rough day health-wise for the Patriots, as 20 players either did not participate in practice (DNP)  or had limited participation (LP). The only good news was DB Jabrill Pepper (LP on Wednesday) was back to full participation. And LT Trent Brown went from DNP on Wednesday to LP on Thursday.

With so many players on the injury report, one starts to question (as Tedy Bruschi did last Sunday) if this is all bad luck, or if they are motivated to play.
