He’s Back! Christian Barmore Returns to Patriots Practice

There was some big news at Thursday’s New England Patriots practice. Christian Barmore took the field with his teammates. It was the first time the defensive tackle practiced since receiving a blot clot diagnosis at the beginning of training camp.

The scary news for Barmore came on July 28. The team released a statement that said Barmore had been “tested, diagnosed, and treated.” No timetable was given for Barmore’s return, though the team’s statement gave some optimism. It concluded with, “We look forward to his full recovery.”

Barmore spent the entire season to date on the reserve/non-football injury list (NFI).

Barmore had a breakout season for the Patriots in 2023. He recorded 64 tackles (39 solo), 16 quarterback hits, 8.5 sacks, and had six passes defended. All marked career highs for Barmore. His performance earned him PFN’s 2023 Andre Tippett Award as the New England Patriots Defensive Player of the Year.

New England rewarded Barmore for his strong season. They signed him to a four-year extension this past offseason, worth up to $92 million. Along with defensive end Keion White and cornerback Christian Gonzalez, Barmore is part of the young, core of defenders the Patriots hope to build around moving forward.

There remains no timetable for Christian Barmore to return to game action. It is highly unlikely playing against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday is in the cards. However, today’s return to practice is obviously a step in the right direction. Getting Barmore back would be a massive addition to the New England Patriot defense. But having Barmore’s health appear to be back on track is the biggest news coming out of Foxboro on Thursday.
