Patriots Football Daily: Bill Belichick Crushes Draft Analyst Debut

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick debuted as an NFL Draft analyst last night, joining the Pat McAfee Show cast for Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit. Based on instant reactions, it appeared to be a huge success for Belichick. He shared his wealth of football knowledge, breaking down film on prospects. He told stories as well, including the time that the Patriots traded for Randy Moss.
"The most interesting trade was the Randy Moss trade..
We had been trying to trade for him for two months..
The first two times I called him to say we got him he hung up the phone because he thought it was a prank" 😂😂 ~ Bill Belichick#PMSDraftSpectacular pic.twitter.com/ov13j9L7Xg

Belichick expressed feelings about the newest addition to the New England Patriots, quarterback Drake Maye. While he was complimentary about Maye’s arm and talent, he also cited several areas needing improvement. Chief among these were reading defenses, being willing to throw into tight spaces (instead of waiting for players to be wide open), and staying in the pocket instead of looking to scramble or run.
"Drake Maye makes some amazing plays that you really like..
He can really drive the ball and he's a freak athlete" ~ Bill Belichick #PMSDraftSpectacular https://t.co/wJHIM1vS9Q pic.twitter.com/RvmUZpXDra

Bill Belichick stating Drake Maye needs more experience should come as no surprise. After coaching in the NFL for nearly half a century, Belichick has said the only player who was truly NFL-ready on Day 1 of their career was Lawrence Taylor, arguably the greatest defense player in NFL history. This did not sound like a prediction Maye would fail. Belichick was pointing out that Maye had a lot of work ahead in order to succeed. New England bet that Maye is willing and able to do just that. Stay tuned.
