For the past 24 seasons, the New England Patriots have had Bill Belichick as their head coach. Although he was replaced by Jerod Mayo following the 2023 season, the Belichick streak will continue into season 25. Brian Belichick, New England’s safeties coach, will be returning to Foxboro for the 2024 season.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss was the first to report.

Brian Belichick has been a member of New England’s staff since 2017. He has been the safeties coach since 2020. He had been working alongside both his father and brother Steve Belichick up until now. Bill Belichick is currently without a job, while Steve Belichick was recently named defensive coordinator for the University of Washington.

Despite not having as high of a profile as his father, or even his older brother, Brian Belichick has been a valuable member of New England’s coaching staff in his own right. The safety group has been one of the team’s brightest spots during his tenure, featuring players like Devin McCourty, Kyle Dugger, and Jabrill Peppers.

The 32-year-old grew up in Massachusetts, attending the Rivers School. He attended Trinity College in Connecticut before beginning his professional career in Foxboro. Thus, Brian Belichick is a lifelong New Englander.

Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff is beginning to take shape. The defensive coaching room now features defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington, defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, and Belichick. It is unclear at this point if Brian Belichick will continue to coach safeties. Steve Belichick also began with defensive backs before moving to linebackers. There are likely to be at least two more defensive assistants added, with cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino a likely candidate to return.
