The New England Patriots offensive coaching staff for 2024 continues to take shape. A day after Ben McAdoo was brought aboard as an offensive assistant, another hire is being rumored. T.C. McCartney is rumored as a top target to join the staff as the new quarterbacks coach.

McCartney, like McAdoo, has a history of working with Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. He has worked alongside Van Pelt with the Cleveland Browns for the past four seasons (2020-2023). Last year he served as the Browns tight ends coach. McCartney helped Cleveland TE David Njoku have a career season, earning his first Pro Bowl berth.

A former college quarterback at LSU, McCartney’s coaching career has included stops in both college and the NFL. He has spent time with his alma mater (2011, 2016), the University of Colorado (2012-2013), the San Francisco 49ers (2015, 2017-2018), the Denver Broncos (2019), and Cleveland Browns (2014, 2020-2023).

T.C. McCartney’s lone season with the Broncos was his only prior experience as a QB coach. During his NFL career he has otherwise been an offensive assistant/quality control coach before taking over tight end duties the past two seasons.

Quarterbacks McCartney has worked with during his coaching career have included Jimmy Garoppolo, Joe Flacco, and Baker Mayfield, All three are expected to be available this offseason.

McCartney is the son of Sal Aunese and Kristy McCartney. His father was the quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes when he passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 21. T.C. McCartney was just five months old at the time. His mother is the daughter of longtime Colorado head coach Bill McCartney, who is the winningest coach in program history.
