New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore

Providence police pulled over New England Patriots star Christian Barmore Wednesday morning on a traffic stop. The interaction left Barmore with citations for the operation of an unregistered vehicle, display of plates penalties, and driving with an expired license. However, that was not the end of the incident.

Barmore took to social media at 1:22 a.m., roughly 25 minutes after the incident took place. He posted, “I just experienced for the first time 5 Providence cops being very unprofessional racism at it’s finest,” Barmore deleted the post later in the day.

Video of Christian Barmore’s interaction with the Providence Police Department was released publicly Thursday. The video showed Bamore annoyed about being pulled over. Police informed him that the vehicle would be towed from the scene since it was not registered. Barmore told the officers repeatedly not to touch him. The portion of the interaction that was made public did not support allegations of inappropriate behavior on behalf of the Providence police officers.

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo stated Wednesday that he was aware of the situation but preferred to focus on their upcoming opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, at that time.

Christian Barmore Issues an Apology

Barmore released a statement on Saturday apologizing for his behavior during the traffic stop. He stated that the days since the incident have given him a chance to reflect on his behavior.

“I want everyone to know that I’m sorry and I take full accountability for my actions,” Barmore wrote. “I apologize to the Providence Police Department, my teammates, and my family.”

Christian Barmore noted in his statement that his mother was a police officer. He stated he understands the pressure that comes with their job and how his behavior did not make their jobs easier. Barmore added that he met with the Providence police in person to offer a sincere apology.

“That meeting is just the first step of many I’m taking on the route to self improvement,” concluded Barmore’s statement.

Moving Forward

Christian Barmore and the New England Patriots want to put this situation behind them as quickly as possible. Barmore signed a massive contract extension in the offseason. He received a blood clot diagnosis at the beginning of training camp and has been sidelined since. His football future remains a question mark.

The Patriots have endured a rough 2024 on and off the field. New England sports a 1-5 record heading into their Week 7 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They have faced rumors of a “locker room mutiny” and several key injuries. Earlier this month, team captain Jabrill Peppers was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including strangulation, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and possession of a Class B substance. The NFL placed Peppers on the commissioner’s exempt list.

The New England Patriots want Christian Barmore’s focus to be on his recovery. He is one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the league when healthy and arguably the Patriots’ best player. The sooner police incidents and other negative issues are removed from the equation, the better for everyone in Foxboro. Barmore’s apology appears to be a solid step in teh right direction.
