Top 5 Patriots Postgame Quotes: “We Should Win Every Game”

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo at the postgame press conference after they lost 25-24 to the Indianapolis Colts to fall to 3-10 on the season.

The New England Patriots lost 25-24 to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday after allowing the go-ahead touchdown and two-point conversion with twelve seconds remaining in the game. Like all losses, it was a tough pill to swallow. However, it was also a far different game than a week earlier.

When the Dolphins beat the Patriots 34-15 in Week 12, the game was never in question. Miami outplayed New England throughout. It made the outcome a foregone conclusion long before the final whistle.

A week later, the Patriots very much had a chance to win. New England scored first, led at halftime, and led until that two-point conversion in the waning moments. Is it tougher to lose a game when playing terribly and getting trounced, or when a win is barely out of reach? New England got to experience both feelings in just eight days.

With only four games left in the 2024 season, it is getting harder for the team to find silver linings. Despite improved play, the result was the same: another loss. The New England Patriots fell to 3-10 after their third straight defeat.

These were the Top 5 quotes from the Patriots after losing to the Colts:

5. Tight End, Hunter Henry: “Just Too Many Mistakes”

Team captain Hunter Henry sounded drained and deflated after the game.

“It’s just hard,” said Henry. “Put a lot into this, and I feel like we emptied the tank and just got beat today. Just had too many mistakes.”

Henry pointed the finger at himself when asked about the Colts Julian Blackmon intercepting a Drake Maye pass, the Patriots lone turnover in the game.

“That’s just a play I got to make and it’s on me,” Henry said of the interception.

Henry chose to speak about his own performance when asked about New England’s inability to finish off drives in the red zone.

“I got to be better down there,” said Henry. “I got to run better routes, I got to block better. So, I think I can just speak for myself. I think we all just have to be better. And I mean obviously, that [New England’s red zone failures] was the story of the game.”

4. Running Back, Antonio Gibson: “It Shows What We’re Capable Of”

Gibson played well for the Patriots and scored his first touchdown of the season. His comments combined feeling good about a solid showing, with the disappointment of the outcome.

“I feel like everybody on both sides of the ball fought really hard. You know, it shows what we’re capable of.”

Gibson praised his teammates, saying, “I’m proud of the guys for continuing to fight and keep playing how we are.” He added, “You know, we just got to fix the small stuff that’s kind of beating ourselves.”

A third straight loss and 3-10 overall record were tough to ignore, despite the positives.

“We do continue to fight. We continue to practice hard. You know, we’re trying to take a step in the right direction,” said Gibson. “But you know, when things happen like that, it’s hard. So you know, we all felt that one. It’s not a great feeling right now.”

3. Quarterback, Drake Maye: “It Was Heartbreaking”

Some New England Patriots received criticism for the light mood in the locker room after getting beat by the Dolphins. Rookie QB Drake Maye was not one of them. He took the loss to Miami hard, and a week later against Indianapolis was no different.

“Yeah, it was heartbreaking,” said Maye of the latest loss. “I think our guys fought hard.”

Maye made several comments that demonstrate what make him an excellent teammate and future team captain.

“Proud of the way the guys fought. Proud of the defense. I think they played their butts off. And especially the guys up front on offense. They did a great job.”

Maye made it clear that effort was not the issue for the Patriots.

“We’re practicing hard, we’re fighting hard, and just came up short,” he explained. “It’s a bummer.”

He added, “I hate it for these guys and I hate it for these coaches.”

2. Cornerback, Christian Gonzalez: “It’s Too Late in the Season To Be Saying We’re Close”

While the game was much closer than the week prior, and the Patriots had a chance to win, Gonzalez was not taking any moral victories.

“As a defense, we’ve got to be better,” said Gonzalez. “It’s too late in the season to be saying we’re close. We’ve got to be able to make those plays and finish out the game.”

He emphasized this being the case on the Colts final, game-winning drive.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Gonzalez explained. “We made plays but, you know, they made more plays.”

Gonzalez explained what happened on the pass he intercepted in the fourth quarter.

“I was just man on man, and he [Colts’ receiver Alec Pierce] ran the same route earlier,” Gonzalez stated. “So I saw it, trusted my instincts, and went and made the play.”

1. Head Coach Jerod Mayo: “We Should Win Every Game”

Jerod Mayo’s head coaching record fell to 3-10 with the loss to Indianapolis. He acknowledged the team’s penalty issues and said it was a tough game. Mayo was asked about the 19-play, 80-yard drive for Indianapolis that won them the game.

“We just didn’t make the stops we needed to,” said Mayo.

However, Mayo would not point to one play or one drive or one facet of the game that made the difference.

“I would just say from the entire game, we just weren’t good enough.”

Jerod Mayo was asked if he believed this was a game the New England Patriots should have won.

“Look, it comes down to execution,” said Mayo. “I think we should win every game. That’s just my mentality.”
