The New England Patriots begin their voluntary minicamp today in Foxboro. This is different than the offseason workout program, which took place two weeks ago. During that week, only strength and conditioning coaches were allowed on the field. Over the next two days, all coaches will be allowed on the field.

As the title suggests, this is a 100% voluntary activity for players. This means players not attending cannot be fined for skipping. However, at least 50 of the 70 Patriots under contract were in attendance for the start of the voluntary workout program earlier this month. Attendance for voluntary minicamp is likely to be at least as high.

With the NFL Draft kicking off on Thursday, this is another chance for some players to make a positive impression before the Patriots braintrust decides whether or not to draft their potential replacement. With a lot of turnover on the coaching staff, it is also a chance for coaches and players to get to know each other more in a practice/teaching setting. With their new coaching staff, the Patriots may focus on scheme, terminology, or just fundamentals.

This is the part of the calendar where no news is generally good news. So, barring the announcement of a contract extension before the draft, Patriots fans should hope for nothing noteworthy from voluntary minicamp.

Football Fun Fact of the Day

The New England Patriots have selected the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but they have had some former No. 3 overall picks on the team. Who has played the most games for the Patriots of any No. 3 overall pick? Gerard Warren. The defensive tackle from the Florida Gators was taken by the Browns in the 2001 NFL Draft. He played his final two seasons (2010-2011) for the New England Patriots, playing in 32 games, including the postseason.
