Patriots Football Daily: Lazy Analysis and Comps Season
The period leading to the NFL Draft is referred to as “The Lying Season.” Teams and agents share misinformation, often through the media, to hide true intentions. It can be done to mislead other franchises or mislead fans into thinking the team is doing more than they are. So no, New England Patriots fans should not believe every bit of information coming out about their favorite franchise.
Teams and agents aren’t the only people sharing misinformation. Analysts at this time of year often spew nonsense. Certain prospects seem to receive the most scrutiny. This year that prospect is North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.
Understandably, draftniks can study film and simply view prospects differently. Your Patriots Football Now scribe didn’t have first-round grades on Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Zach Wilson, and others. People paid far more, with jobs and reputations at stake in NFL offices, opted to take those players very early.
Did Chris Simms sincerely believe Zach Wilson was a better prospect than Trevor Lawrence in 2021? Unlikely. It is more believable Simms wanted to take an alternative opinion, get attention, and claim he knew best if things worked out that way.
Merril Hoge claimed recently he would not take Drake Maye in the first round. Yesterday, on the Felger and Mazz radio show in Boston, guest Cerrone Battle claimed he wouldn’t draft Maye at all. Battle compared Drake Maye to Zach Wilson. Other Maye NFL comps of late have included Mitch Trubisky and Mac Jones. What?
Drake Maye needing to sit for a season to improve his footwork is believable. Maye not becoming an All-Pro is possible. No prospect is a lock for success. But Drake Maye, like LSU QB Jayden Daniels, is an excellent prospect the Patriots would be fortunate to draft.
