Despite having 11 confirmed interviews for their open offensive coordinator position, the New England Patriots have hired somebody who was not among them. According to reports, Alex Van Pelt will be leading New England’s offensive this coming season. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was the first to report.

Van Pelt has been the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator for the past four seasons. As part of Cleveland’s offensive shakeup following the season, he was recently announced as one of the coaches who would not be back with the Browns in 2024.

Following an excellent college career as a quarterback at Pitt, Alex Van Pelt enjoyed an 11-year NFL career with the Steelers, Chiefs, and Bills. He then spent two seasons as a radio color commentator for Bills games before embarking on a coaching career. His NFL coaching stops have included Buffalo (2006-2009), Tampa Bay (2010-2011), Green Bay (2012-2017), and Cincinnati (2018-2019) before joining Cleveland.

Van Pelt’s time in Green Bay overlapped with New England executive Eliot Wolf. He served as the Bills offensive coordinator in 2009 in addition to his time as OC with the Browns. He has been a quarterback coach and offensive assistant for the balance of his coaching career.

The 53-year-old has worked with an abundance of quarterbacks during his two decades of coaching. Included among these are Ryan Fitzpatrick, Aaron Rodgers, Andy Dalton, Baker Mayfield, and Deshaun Watson.

The New England Patriots have made no official coaching staff announcements yet, aside from head coach Jerod Mayo. However, it appears they now have taken care of all three coordinator positions. In addition to Alex Van Pelt becoming offensive coordinator, DeMarcus Covington is reportedly going to be defensive coordinator, with Jeremy Springer as special teams coordinator. With the main spots now secure, the rest of the staff should be filled soon.
