Top 5 Patriots Postgame Quotes After Losing in Buffalo

New England Patriots right end Hunter Henry speaks to reporters after the team's 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills

Following the New England Patriots Week 15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, there was a sense of frustration in their postgame comments. They played played poorly against an average team and the game got away from them. While the end result was the same on Sunday, another New England loss, the teams seemed to be more encouraged with their performance.

The Patriots were disappointed about the loss. However, a tight loss on the road against the Buffalo Bills seemed easier to accept. There was also a lot more positives than in some previous losses to hang their hats on. It is better to point to a handful of plays that could have altered the outcome than dwell on a big picture of being uncompeititive thoroughout a game.

Nobody from New England sounded satisfied by being competitive in a loss. However, there was certainly a silver lining in improved play. The Patriots seem to believe things are headed in the right direction and can eventually get to where they need to be. This impression was not present after their loss to Arizona. With a 3-12 record and only two games remaining, some might believe feeling positive about anything with this New England Patriots team is unwarranted. However, a large portion of this crew will be back in 2025. Having some hope as the offseason approaches does not seem so bad.

The Top 5 Patriots postgame quotes following their Week 16 loss:

5. “There’s No Moral Victories.”

Patriots captain Hunter Henry was not among those ready to celebrate a “moral victory” after the loss. Henry stated that despite the solid effort, the team fell short of its goal. He added, “We come in to win the game, that’s the main goal.”

Henry exemplified the frustration of being on a 3-12 team, even after a solid showing.

“I love to compete. I love to compete at the highest level, and I love to win.” Henry added, “I hate losing.”

4. “I Think We’re Building Something Good”

Quarterback Drake Maye continued showing why he’s a solid leader despite his rookie status. He saved his criticism for himself, explaining how he needs to be better with turnovers and in the red zone. But he shared optimism and enthusiasm about the rest of the team and the franchise in general.

Maye admitted, “When you lose, it’s kind of tough, you know, to think of the positives.” However, he remained positive about the bigger picture.

“I think we’re building something good,” said Maye. “Something that feels right here.”

The rookie quarterback added, “I’m proud to be a Patriot.”

3. “We’re Always Looking for Ways to Win”

Jerod Mayo stood out from the pack with his postgame press conference. It appeared he made a conscious effort to say nothing he would need to walk back or try to explain the next day. Doing so became a trend for Jerod Mayo this season.

Mayo resorted to the types of cliches Bill Belichick utilized for decades in New England. It served him well. “We’re always looking for ways to win” wasn’t the only generic response the head coach gave after the game. He also incorporated, “I try to do what’s best for the team.”

When Jerod Mayo did not have an answer ready about a specific situation, he responded with some version of, “I have to watch the film,” multiple times. Mayo likely received some PR advice somewhere between Arizona and Buffalo. If so, it worked. Perhaps his postgame press conference was less “media friendly” and had fewer soundbites than usual, but it saved him some Monday clarifications, which have not helped his credibility with the fanbase this season.

2. “I Won’t Throw Anyone Under the Bus”

Mayo stated at his introductory press conference that he didn’t want any finger pointers on the team. Antonio Gibson showed himself to be anything but with his postgame comments. He stated he wouldn’t throw anyone under the bus when asked about the playcalling of Alex Van Pelt. Gibson took it a step further, endorsing his coach and pointing a finger at himself.

Gibson talked about all of the things he could have been doing better, dating back to what he deemed a slow start to the season for himself. Even his opening 42-yard kickoff return yesterday, which provided the New England Patriots with a great start to the game, Gibson pointed out that he could have broken it even further.

1. “I Love Playing for Jerod [Mayo] and I Love Playing for AVP [Alex Van Pelt]”

The top spot in this week’s quotes was the endorsements made for the New England Patriots coaching staff. This one came from Hunter Henry. He added something that might seem strange to the outside world.

“I’ve enjoyed every moment with them,” Henry said of Mayo and Van Pelt. “They’ve both been very consistent with who they are.”

People outside the building don’t necessarily have an impression of Jerod Mayo as consistent with who he is this season. This is based largely on how much time has been spent on “clarifying” comments throughout this season. Patriots management must be encouraged by the belief of a team leader that the outside perception does not necessarily match the one in the locker room.

Hunter Henry wasn’t the only one who endorsed his coaches after the game. Antonio Gibson’s full quote about Alex Van Pelt was:

“I’m rocking with my coach. Regardless of what’s going on, how certain people feel, I won’t be the one to dog anyone,” said Gibson.

Drake Maye was blunt when asked about talk involving the Patriots coaching staff: “Conversations about our coaching staff and, you know, stuff like that, I think it’s some b.s. to be quite honest.”

The New England Patriots didn’t get a victory over the Buffalo Bills, but the postgame comments felt like a win for the Patriots coaching staff.
