Monday’s Patriots 90-Man Roster Spotlight feature on Patriots Football Now focused on veteran defensive tackle Davon Godchaux. After spending his first four NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Godchaux played in New England for the past three. He has been productive and durable during his tenure with the New England Patriots, yet to miss a game. But Godchaux faces the uncertainty of 2024 being the final year of his contract, making him eligible to hit free agency in 2025.

New England agreed to extensions with Christian Barmore, David Andrews, and Rhamondre Stevenson this offseason. These are solid moves at locking up core players, though others still await their extension. Notable Patriots scheduled to hit free agency in 2025 include Matthew Judon, Jahlani Tavai, Jabrill Peppers, Jonathan Jones, and Davon Godchaux.

With all five players, Eliot Wolf and the rest of the New England front office must determine what is best for the team. All five are valuable players, so releasing them is not under consideration. That leaves three options for the Patriots. They must either agree to an extension with the player, trade them, or let them play out their contract and hit free agency in 2025.

These options for Godchaux were discussed on Twitter/X and the defensive tackle opted to discuss.

Davon Godchaux Comments on Contract Situation

The three scenarios for Godchaux were proposed (extend, trade, or status quo). The Patriots and Godchux were both asked to chime in. Davon Godchaux did just that.

“Hopefully we can get something done that’s fair to me and my team before camp starts!” replied Godchaux. “I love NE, I would love to retire here but it’s has to make sense for us! What I do on the football field in the trenches most of time doesn’t show on the stat sheet but turn on the film you will see it if “U know” ball! Would love to finish my career here in NE but it has to make sense to me and my team!”

It appears the ball is now in the New England Patriots court. Davon Godchaux let it known he’d love to stay in New England. The deal just needs to make sense. The words “before camp starts” are of particular interest. It was announced earlier today that veterans are set to report to training camp on July 23. That gives the Patriots and Godchaux four weeks to come to an agreement and make their productive defensive lineman a happy camper next month.
