Jacoby Brissett played his rookie season with the New England Patriots back in 2016. The quarterback will be returning to his first NFL home in 2024. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was the first to report.

Championship Rookie

New England selected Jacoby Brissett in the third round (No. 91 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. He started two games as a rookie for the Patriots, while Tom Brady was suspended and Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. He became the first African-American quarterback to start a game in franchise history. Brissett was a member of the Super Bowl 51 champions in his first season.

Other NFL Stops

The Patriots traded Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts following the season for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. Brissett played his next four seasons in Indianapolis, before one-year stops in Miami, Cleveland, and Washington. Brissett has appeared in 79 games over his eight NFL seasons. He holds a career record of 18-30 in 48 career starts. Although his starting record is unimpressive, his numbers are solid for the role he is being asked to fill.

Jacoby Brissett has thrown 51 career touchdown passes and 23 interceptions. He’s run for 15 touchdowns as well. By contrast, the New England Patriots quarterbacks last season, Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, combined for 16 passing touchdowns and 21 interceptions, while rushing for one.

The Cleveland Browns signed Brissett for the 2022 season. He started 11 games due to Deshaun Watson’s suspension. He accounted for 14 total touchdowns against six interceptions.

Brissett did not see much playing time in 2023. The Washington Commanders started Sam Howell at quarterback for all 17 games. By the end of the season, it appeared they were just trying to figure out if Howell was their QB of the future, as they had once hoped.

Patriots Football Now suggested New England sign Jacoby Brissett for the 2024 season back on Jan. 15, 2024. Then when analyzing the 30 free agent quarterbacks, Brissett made the most sense in several ways.

New England’s Quarterback Room

Although most of the people from the 2016 New England Patriots are gone, there will be some familiar faces for Brissett. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt help the same post during Brissett’s year in Cleveland. Quarterback coach T.C. McCartney and offensive line coach Scott Peters were on that Browns staff as well. And his former Patriots teammates Jerod Mayo and Dont’a Hightower are now on the coaching staff as well.

Jacoby Brissett joins Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke as quarterback currently under contract with the New England Patriots for 2024. The assumption remains that Eliot Wolf will look to add a franchise QB in the 2024 NFL Draft.
