New England Patriots
NFL writer throws cold water on idea of Patriots bringing in recently released defender

Training camp is now well underway for NFL teams, and the Patriots have already had four days of practice. Therefore, we’re getting a good idea of what the team will look in 2025, but there’s always the possibility of another big move or two before the regular season.
Recently, the Las Vegas Raiders shockingly cut star defender Christian Wilkins. The move was reportedly the result of the team being unhappy with Wilkins’ approach to rehab, and now the stout defensive lineman will be looking to catch on elsewhere quickly. Mike Vrabel recently shared that he would be open to bringing in Wilkins, and it’s hard not to be excited about that possibility.
For one, Wilkins grew up in Massachusetts and Vrabel recruited him out of high school. Additionally, the Patriots could use some more pass rush however they can get it, and Wilkins has a 9-sack season under his belt. So, will the Patriots end up signing Wilkins?
It’s not likely, says Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report. Sobleski recently played “buy or sell” with the hottest rumors, and the veteran writer is selling the idea of Wilkins in New England.
Regarding this possibility, Sobleski offered the following analysis:
Once that’s out of the way, Wilkins is a high-end starter who should be welcomed into most lineups. However, the Patriots are somewhat different based on the investments the team already has along their defensive front.
Earlier this offseason, the organization signed Milton Williams to a four-year, $104 million free-agent contract. A year ago, Christian Barmore inked a four-year, $92 million contract extension. While the Patriots currently have the most available salary-cap space, that number drops dramatically in 2026 based on current projections, which means the team will need to roll over a significant amount.
If Wilkins wants to sign a short-term, lower incentive deal, he’d be better served going to a squad with much higher expectations than the Patriots.
As Sobleski mentioned, the Patriots invested heavily in the defensive line already this offseason. This could make the team hesitant to throw more money at the position, and if Wilkins has to settle for a short-term deal, he’d likely prefer to play for a contender.
However, if Wilkins wants to return to his home area and play for an exciting, improving team, he may be open to a deal with the Patriots. A defensive line consisting of Wilkins, Milton Williams, and Christian Barmore would be one of the best fronts in the entire league.
