New England Patriots wide receiver Tyquan Thornton

The New England Patriots released wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on Saturday. Two days later, he was a member of the defending Super Bowl champions. After clearing waivers, Thornton signed with the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad on Monday.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the move.

Fresh Start in First Place

The change of scenery improves Tyquan Thornton’s place in the NFL standings. Thornton moves from the 3-8 Patriots to join the 9-1 Chiefs. Kansas City is attempting to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Chiefs have placed a premium on speed, which Thornton provides. They drafted wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft after he ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.21) in NFL Scouting Combine history. Thornton has the fastest time (4.28) of any player drafted by the New England Patriots.

The signing closes the book on Thornton’s time with the Patriots. He played 28 games over two-plus seasons in New England. Thornton caught 39 passes for 385 yards and two touchdowns.

Tyquan Thornton becomes the third wide receiver from the New England Patriots’ training camp roster to land elsewhere. Jalen Reagor made the initial 53-man roster for New England. The Patriots cut him the following day before re-signing him to the practice squad. He eventually got released by the practice squad and joined the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad. JuJu Smith-Schuster was waived, cut in camp, and signed with Kansas City. Smith-Schuster has ten receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown since signing with the Chiefs.
