Patriots Daily: Ochaun Mathis Added to 53-Man Roster

New England Patriots linebacker Ochaun Mathis

On Monday the New England Patriots traded Joshua Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs. The following day, they replaced him on the 53-man roster. New England announced they were adding edge defender Ochaun Mathis to the main roster from the Patriots practice squad, filling their lone vacancy.

Mathis had been elevated from the Patriots practice squad three times this season, including Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. He made an excellent block on special teams, helping spring Marcus Jones’ 62-yard punt return. Mathis wears No. 32 and delivers the block at the Patriots 45-yard line.

New England signed Ochaun Mathis to their practice squad on Aug. 30, 2024. He spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams, after being drafted him in the sixth round (No. 189 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. He played four seasons in college at TCU before transferring to Nebraska for his final season in 2022. Mathis amassed 183 tackles, 35.5 tackles for a loss, and 19.0 sacks over his 50 collegiate games.

Over his three games with the Patriots in 2024 he has played 45 snaps, with 40 coming on special teams. With New England having traded Matthew Judon and Joshua Uche this season, in addition to losing Oshane Ximines to a season-ending injury, there should be an opportunity for Mathis to impress and possibly stick around a while.

Ex-Patriots on the NFL’s Transaction Wire

Several former Patriots were among the NFL transactions on Tuesday. The Chicago Bears placed OL Bill Murray on injured reserve. Murray was injured during Sunday’s game against the Commanders.

Indianapolis released Josiah Bronson, who was with New England during training camp. New Orleans released center Sincere Haynesworth, who was briefly with the Patriots practice squad earlier this month. Arizona released 2018 Patriots draft pick Keion Crossen. The three former New England players were on the practice squads of their latest teams.

Patriots Fact of the Day

Former New England Patriots running back Reggie Dupard turns 61 today. The Patriots selected Dupard in the first round (No. 26 overall) of the 1986 NFL Draft. Dupard played in 57 games for New England, rushing for 571 yards over parts of four seasons.

Of the eight running backs the Patriots have drafted in Round 1, Dupard is the only player not to reach 1,000 yards rushing during his time in New England.
