Patriots Daily: John Jiles Returns; Texans Place Nico Collins on IR

Published

on

The Houston Texans will be without wide receiver Nico Collins when they face the New England Patriots in Week 6.

The New England Patriots filled one of their open roster spots Wednesday. They signed wide receiver John Jiles to a spot on the practice squad. New England still has an open spot on their 53-man roster and another vacancy on the practice squad.

Jiles was with the Patriots practice squad for one week earlier this season. He signed on Sept. 24 and was released on Oct. 1. New England released WR Matt Turner from the practice squad on Tuesday, which leaves Jiles as the lone wide receiver on the practice squad.

John Jiles dominated playing for Division 2 West Florida last season, amassing 66 receptions for 1,255 yards and 16 touchdowns. Despite his production and good measurables (6-foot-3, 219 pounds, 4.57 40-yard dash) he went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. He spent training camp with the New York Giants and showed flashes before being cut.

Texans Place Nico Collins on IR

When the Houston Texans come to Foxboro on Sunday they will be without star wide receiver Nico Collins. Houston placed Collins on injured reserve Wednesday. Last Sunday, he suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter of the Texans’ win over the Buffalo Bills. Despite missing most of that game, Collins leads the NFL in receiving yardage through Week 5.

Collins has 32 receptions for 567 yards and three touchdowns through five games. He is coming off a breakout 2022 season in which he caught 80 passes for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns. With Collins sidelined, Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez will likely be assigned to Stefon Diggs on Sunday.

Houston continues to have a dangerous offense with C.J. Stroud at quarterback, but the loss of Collins is significant.
