Patriots Daily: What Will New England’s Offensive Line Look Like?

The New England Patriots have played five games this season and started five different offensive lines. They’ve had multiple starters at all five positions across the line. Only Mike Onwenu has started every game so far; four at right tackle before moving to right guard on Sunday. So what is the Patriots’ plan for the offensive line moving forward?
New England’s starting unit against the Miami Dolphins in Week 5 consisted of:
LT – Vederian Lowe
LG – Michael Jordan
C – Nick Leverett
RG – Mike Onwenu
RT – Demontrey Jacobs
Lowe appears safe to remain the Patriots’ starting left tackle as long as he remains healthy. Other options from the season’s start are no longer available. Chukwuma Okorafor left the team and Caedan Wallace is on injured reserve. Most importantly, Vederian Lowe played well against Miami. He allowed no quarterback pressures.
Michael Jordan or Sidy Sow at left guard? Sow returned from an ankle injury to start in Week 4 but performed poorly. Jordan took back the starting role in Week 5 and played very well. Should the Patriots stick with Jordan regardless of Sow’s health at this point?
David Andrews’ season ended with a shoulder injury in Week 4. Nick Leverett’s first start produced two penalties and ten pressures allowed. That is not good enough. Leverett likely gets at least one more start. However, if his protections doesn’t improve he cannot keep the job for long. Bryan Hudson and Sincere Haynesworth are options from the practice squad.
The right side of the line depends on the play of right tackle Demontrey Jacobs. Mike Onwenu will start at one of the positions on the right side. New England wants him to play guard and believes he’s a better fit there. But if nobody can play right tackle effectively, Onwenu will be moved back there. That leaves Sidy Sow and Layden Robinson as options at right guard.
Somehow, left tackle suddenly seems to be the most stable position on the offensive line. Will New England roll out the same offensive line for consecutive weeks on Sunday? Stay tuned.
