Patriots Daily: Robert Saleh Out As New York Jets Head Coach

Published

on

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has been fired after a 1-4 start to the 2024 season. Their lone win came in Week 3 against the New England Patriots.

The first coaching change of the 2024 NFL season occurred on Tuesday morning. After returning from London with a loss to Minnesota Vikings, the New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh. The Jets came into the season with high expectations from many, but after their Week 3 win against the New England Patriots, New York lost two straight to fall to 2-3. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will serve as the team’s interim head coach.

Jets owner Woody Johnson released a statement confirming the coaching change.

The Jets hired Saleh, then the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, in 2021. He posted a 20-36 record (.357 winning percentage) during his tenure as head coach. The Jets last reached the playoffs in 2010, a streak Saleh couldn’t end. It did not appear Saleh and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were on the best of terms, which didn’t bode well for the head coach either.

Sometimes, firing a head coach is indicative of a team throwing in the towel on a season. That does not appear to be the case here. Rodgers is the oldest player in the NFL, and the Jets are desperate to get back to the postseason. They have enough talent on paper to make that happen. If Ulbrich proves he can handle the job, New York has already found their replacement. If not, they have a head start on hiring a permanent replacement for 2025 and beyond.
