Patriots Daily: Don’t Believe Jacoby Brissett Headlines

Published

on

Jerod Mayo announced on Monday that he would be sticking with Jacoby Brissett as the New England Patriots starting quarterback in Week 5. Following a rough outing on Sunday, which included two turnovers, some wondered if it was time to give rookie Drake Maye a shot. Others believe the rookie should not be put behind an offensive line unable to keep him upright. Brissett addressed this during a radio interview yesterday.

“I don’t control that part of this whole process thing at all,” said Brissett. “Do I hear it? Of course, I’m not deaf. I’m not blind to the fact that…we drafted this guy number three overall. People feel like that’s what they want to see. I try to just block it out and do my thing.”

Host Andy Hart asked Brissett if he found it disrespectful that some want to keep him in to avoid Drake Maye getting hurt.

“It is,” admitted Brissett. He then added, “Why waste my time to worry about the people that say those things? I just block it out.”

“Jacoby Brissett Feels Disrespected”

The headline from people writing about Brissett’s interview on WEEI was that the quarterback felt disrespected. It was on social media posts and soundbites, and will surely make for more talking points on Boston sports media this week. However, this does Jacoby Brissett a great disservice.

Hart specifically asked Brissett if it was disrespectful to him that one of the arguments “out there” was that Drake Maye shouldn’t play behind a line that couldn’t keep him safe. Brissett didn’t bring up feeling disrespected or even say the word at any point. He gave a direct answer to a direct question, and the question was basically, “How do you feel about people preferring you get injured instead of Drake Maye?”

Brissett went out of his way to mention his offensive line doing a good job, took responsibility for missing open players at times, and tried to look ahead with a positive attitude after the team’s 1-3 start.

So, while the Patriots QB confirmed when asked that he found the narrative of not caring if he was injured disrespectful, who wouldn’t? People painting Brissett in a negative light from headlines need to appreciate the bigger picture. Being unhappy with his play is one thing, but being unhappy with Jacoby Brissett’s attitude is way off the mark.

Patriots Fact/Trivia of the Day

Jacoby Brissett played for the New England Patriots in 2016, left for seven seasons, and returned in 2024. It is far from the record for the longest gap between stints playing quarterback for the Patriots, however. Doug Flutie played for the Patriots from 1987-1989. After stints in the Canadian Football League and with two other NFL franchises, Flutie returned to New England and appeared in five games in 2005.

More From Patriots Football Now

A Disgruntled DeMario Douglas Doesn’t Help the Patriots – DeMario Douglas had a solid rookie season in 2023. Bigger things were expected in 2024. To date, that hasn’t been happening and the wide receiver seems to be getting unhappy in New England.

PFF’s Week 4 Best and (Mostly) Worst Patriots Grades – Joe Slye earned high marks for kicking a 63-yard field goal. Jabrill Peppers, Christian Gonzalez, and Christian Elliss joined him. But the majority of the Patriots scored far lower on Sunday.

Ten Takeaways From New England’s 30-13 Loss in San Francisco – The New England Patriots fell to 1-3 after a blowout loss in San Francisco. Despite the game feeling like a mismatch, New England still had a chance to make something happen in the fourth quarter. Ten quick takeaways following the team’s third straight loss.
