Patriots Daily: “It’s a Long Season,” Says Jerod Mayo
New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo met with the media following his team’s 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, In the six minutes he spoke, one message was repeated several times. The Patriots season is still far from over.
“I told the guys it is a long season,” Mayo said of his postgame message to the team. “It is a long season. And we’re wrapping up the first quarter of the season. I don’t think any of us are happy where we are.”
Where the Patriots are is with one win through four weeks. The loss in San Francisco marked the third straight loss for New England. They’ve lost the past two games by a combined margin of 54-16. The combined first-half scores the past two weeks were 34-6. The Patriots’ offense lacks the explosiveness to overcome such early deficits.
“The players know it’s early in the season,” Mayo said. “And they understand that. We have veteran players in there and they understand it’s a long season and we’ve always talked about how that North Star is just to get better each and every week.”
Jerod Mayo is correct that it is still relatively early in the season. New England has 13 regular season games remaining, so anything from winning the Super Bowl to finishing 1-16 remains in play at this point. But if the “North Star” is getting better every game, the Patriots need to start achieving that goal consistently to get things turned around.
If the mistakes seen in the past two weeks continue, a long season will feel significantly longer.
