New England Patriots CB Ameer Speed

Former New England Patriots cornerback Ameer Speed has moved onto his third team in two NFL seasons. Speed signed with the Chicago Bears practice squad. To make room for Speed, Chicago released rookie cornerback Ro Torrence.

New England drafted Speed in the sixth round (No. 214 overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons in college with the Georgia Bulldogs and was a member of Georgia’s 2021 National Championship team. He transferred to Michigan State for his sixth year of eligibility. Speed played the most defensive snaps on the Spartans while also contributing on special teams.

Ameer Speed made New England’s 53-man roster out of training camp. He appeared in five games for the Patriots, almost exclusively on special teams. The Patriots released him on Oct. 19, 2023. New England likely intended to sign Speed to their practice squad but he was claimed off waivers by the Indianapolis Colts.

Speed played in eight games for the Colts last season. He made six tackles. Of his 239 snaps with Indianapolis, 227 came on special teams. He remained with the Colts through preseason but was part of their final cuts. After originally being signed to Indianapolis’ practice squad to start the season, he was released on Sept. 17, 2024.

Ameer Speed is not the only former New England Patriots player now with the Chicago Bears. Offensive lineman Bill Murray is on their 53-man roster. Speed is joined on the practice squad by defensive linemen Bryon Cowart and Sam Roberts.
