Patriots Daily: Mayo Critical of Himself, Offensive Line Postgame
New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo met the media following Thursday night’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. Mayo looked and sounded discouraged, which is understandable given the lopsided game he had just witnessed. The coach did point the finger at himself, but the offensive line was a main topic of discussion postgame.
“I’ve got to look at myself in the mirror and make sure that I did everything I could to get the guys ready to go,” said Mayo. “And based on the score today, I need to do more.”
But Mayo also defended the coaching staff by saying, “Felt like we had a good game Xs and Os-wise, We just didn’t go out there and execute.”
Most of the questions and comments focused on one aspect of the New England Patriots’ performance, blocking.
New England’s Offensive Line
“I thought the offensive line had a hard time,” Mayo stated. Later he added, “It’s not only knowing how to do it, it’s also knowing what to do.”
Later, Mayo was asked about the beating Jacoby Brissett has been taking this season.
“We have to do better up front,” said Mayo. “Whether it’s through scheme or whatever, we’ve got to reevaluate.”
He was asked how concerned he was with the offensive line and began his response by saying everything was of concern. after being beaten “pretty handily.” He then addressed the question.
“The offensive line, you want those guys to be able to go out there as a unit and gel together. But whether through injury or through whatever it is, we just haven’t found the right combination.”
New England now has ten days to try and find that “right combination” before playing their next game. Perhaps that is enough time for LT Vederian Lowe and LG Sidy Sow to return to the lineup. But whoever is playing on the Patriots offensive line simply needs to play better.

Patriots Fact/Trivia of the Day #1
Jerod Mayo is already ahead of Bill Belichick in terms of wins to start a coaching tenure with the New England Patriots. Belichick’s first year as Patriots head coach began 0-4. The team was 2-8 after ten games and finished the season with a 5-11 record.
Patriots Fact/Trivia of the Day #2
The New York Jets had 40:04 in time of possession last night. Since the NFL began tracking time of possession in 1983, a team has had the ball for at least 40 minutes 252 times. The team controlling the ball is 232-20 in those games.
The last time the Jets had 40 minutes of possession against the Patriots was on Oct. 16, 2014. Coincidentally, that game was also Thursday Night Football. Chris Jones blocked Nick Folk’s potential game-winning field goal attempt and New England beat New York 27-25. Tom Brady threw three touchdowns, two to Shane Vereen. Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins led the defense with 13 tackles each.
