Patriots Daily: “Better to Learn From a Win Than a Loss”
The New England Patriots pulled off a 16-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. There was a lot for the Patriots to feel great about after starting the season 1-0. There is also room for improvement, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. New England did a great job running the ball and not hurting themselves with negative plays. But they did finish with only 121 yards passing with quarterback Jacoby Brissett under significant pressure on his drop backs.
New England’s quarterback was asked about improving week to week when he met with the media on Wednesday.
“Getting a chance to go back, watch the film, and seeing a lot of things that as a team, as an offense, and obviously, personally, that has room for improvement,” said Brissett. “We were joking about it Monday, it’s always better to learn from a win than a loss. So, we’re excited to get back on the practice field, correct those things, and get moving forward.”
The Patriots will have that chance in three days when the Seattle Seahawks come to Gillette Stadium. They will have their hands full with a Seahawks defense that allowed just 138 passing yards on 42 attempts in Week 1 against the Broncos. They intercepted Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix twice.
Coach Mayo Chimes In
Jerod Mayo spoke about the balance between maintaining ball security and making more things happen.
“We talk about not turning over the ball, and not taking negative plays,” said Mayo. “I thought (Jacoby Brissett) did a good job with that. Historically, he has done a good job with that. Hopefully this week, we’ll see some progress.”
One way for that to happen is to get the wideouts more involved. New England’s wide receivers finished Week 1 with a combined eight receptions for 66 yards and no touchdowns. But Mayo did not seem displeased with their performance as a group.
“Those guys were doing the dirty work,” said of the Patriots wide receivers. “I would also say if you turn on the film, we had guys open. When you go back to getting better from week one to week two, we just got to find those guys and give them an opportunity to make plays.”
Can Jacoby Brissett and the New England Patriots offense make that happen against Seattle? Stay tuned.
