Meet the Newest New England Patriot: Jaquelin Roy
The New England Patriots made a roster move on Tuesday. New England brought in defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy, signing him to their practice squad. To make room for Roy, the Patriots released offensive guard Jerome Carvin.
Jaquelin Roy enjoyed a successful collegiate career at LSU. The 247 Composite Rankings made Roy a four-star recruit. He was the No. 41 prospect nationally, No. 6 defensive tackle, and No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana. The only recruit ranked from his home state than Roy was wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. They both committed to play in-state for the LSU Tigers. Now they are reunited in New England.

Pro Career
At the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, Roy measured 6-foot-3 and weighed 305 pounds. He ran a 5.17 in the 40-yard dash at LSU’s Pro Day. Despite his collegiate production, Roy fell to the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Minnesota Vikings selected him No. 141 overall. Roy went three picks ahead of former New England Patriots guard Atonio Mafi.
Jaquelin Roy was active for 12 games as a rookie in 2023, starting one. He played only 96 total defensive snaps. In a limited sample size, he recorded eight tackles, one quarterback hit, and one tackle for a loss.
Many in the Minnesota Vikings media predicted a breakout year for Roy in 2024. He played in all three preseason games for the Vikings but recorded only two tackles and one quarterback pressure. That said, statistics don’t always tell the whole story for a run stuffer in the middle of the line. Minnesota released Roy as part of their final roster cuts. He remained out of the NFL for two weeks before signing with New England on Tuesday.
Jerome Carvin
The New England Patriots cut Jerome Carvin to make room on the practice squad roster for Jaquelin Roy. Carvin played collegiately for the Tennessee Volunteers. He went undrafted in 2023. After spending training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs, Carvin was released on 2023 NFL Cutdown Day. He signed with the Chicago Bears practice squad, where he remained until being part of their final cuts in 2024. The Patriots still have Michael Jordan and Bryan Hudson as interior offensive linemen on the practice squad.
