The New England Patriots organization only gives out one annual award, meant to represent something important to the Kraft family: community service. The Ron Burton Community Service Award is named after the first draft pick in franchise history. He made an impact both on the field and in the community. It’s a legacy of giving that both his actual family and Patriots family continue nearly 21 years after his passing.

Brenden Schooler received this year’s Ron Burton Community Service Award. Robert Kraft presented Schooler with the award at an event at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night.

“He has been a special Patriots ambassador, positively impacting the lives of others,” Kraft said of Schooler. “We look forward to many more years of his contributions, both on and off the field.”

Schooler is a potential Patriots special teams captain this season after the retirement of Matthew Slater. The Patriots signed Schooler as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Texas in 2022. He quickly became a premier special teams player for New England, learning under Slater’s tutelage. Slater himself won the Ron Burton Community Service Award in 2013.

The Ron Burton Community Service Award was first given out in 2003, with Joe Andruzzi as the recipient. Schooler’s teammates Joe Cardona (2018), David Andrews (2020), Deatrich Wise Jr. (2022), and Jonathan Jones (2023) are past recipients as well.
