Patriots Daily: Vederian Lowe Injured, Caedan Wallace Impresses
The New England Patriots appear to have decided on their starting left tackle spot over the past two-plus weeks in training camp. That decision was Vederian Lowe. He played with the first unit for the majority of training camp and started both preseason games. But Wednesday, Lowe exited practice with an injury.
Vederian Lowe left the field without assistance. He was holding his side/lower back area. The Patriots gave no update on the injury yesterday.
Lowe received mixed reviews for his performances in preseason games. Against the Eagles, he played very well despite allowing two pressures, a sack, and being flagged for a false start penalty (yes, I realize that might sound odd). He has given new offensive line coach Scott Peters with his development from 2023, particularly noting his work on hand placement.
Caedan Wallace replaced Lowe at left tackle on the first unit and performed very well. Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald listed Wallace as one of Wednesday’s “studs” in camp. When the New England Patriots made him their third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it appeared the plan was to make Wallace their left tackle of the future. At the time it appeared Mike Onwenu was locked into the right tackle spot for the foreseeable future. But Onwenu has played almost exclusively at right guard during training camp. Chukwuma Okorafor is the first unit right tackle.
Lowe may be back at practice today, and this becomes a non-issue. It is encouraging to see Wallace fill in nicely if needed, perhaps earning him a longer look between now and Week 1 regardless of Lowe’s health status. Today’s events seem to indicate Calvin Anderson might be out of the mix for a roster spot at offensive tackle. He began camp as the starter on the right side, with Okorafor on the left. This week Lowe and Wallace have seen first team reps at left tackle, while Okorafor, Onwenu, and Wallace all saw time on the right side. Those four appear locks for the 53-man roster, barring injury.
