Patriots Daily: Brandon Aiyuk Trade Update, Pats or Browns?

Published

New England Patriots are in trade talks for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk

Reports last night indicated that the San Francisco 49ers are close to trading star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. This alone was not surprising news, as Aiyuk has been participating in meetings, but not practice, in 49ers’ training camp as he looks for a new contract. The breaking news for New England Patriots fans is that Aiyuk could be headed to Foxboro.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area and California was the first to report that San Francisco has agreed to the framework of a deal for Aiyuk with both the Patriots and Cleveland Browns. Aiyuk needs to agree to a new contract with one of the teams for the trade to be finalized. It is likely that a new deal with be for multiple seasons and approach $30 million annually.

The report indicates that the package from both teams centers around picks. The Patriots would send WR Kendrick Bourne to the 49ers, his original team, in that proposal. The Browns would be trading WR Amari Cooper.

From a recent article on Patriots Football Now in which I stated New England should not trade their 2025 first-round pick to obtain Aiyuk, I wrote:

“A team trading for him is getting a certified stud receiver. Aiyuk recorded 1,000-yard seasons in the past two years. He caught 78 passes for 1,015 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022. He followed that up with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023.

Aiyuk is one of ten NFL wide receivers with 150 receptions, 2,000 yards, and 15 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Pro Football Focus gave Brandon Aiyuk a grade of 91.5 last season. This ranked second among all NFL wide receivers, trailing only Miami’s Tyreek Hill.”

It appears there are now three possible destinations for Brandon Aiyuk to play in 2024. He could agree to terms with New Engalnd, Cleveland, or remain in San Francisco. Stay tuned!

Patriots Fun Fact of the Day

Brandon Aiyuk is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. There are three players in New England Patriots history who have done this:

Wes Welker (2007 to 2009 and 2011 to 2012)
Randy Moss (2007 to 2009)
Rob Gronkowski (2014 to 2015)
