Report: Davon Godchaux Inks Two-Year Extension With Patriots

Davon Godchaux let it be known he was not thrilled about entering the final year of his contract with the New England Patriots without an extension. He made it clear he preferred to stay with the Patriots as well. On Wednesday, New England made the defensive tackle happy on both fronts. The sides reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the deal. He stated the contract could be worth up to $21 million with $16.5 million guaranteed.

New England Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Benzan spoke to Patriots Football Now three weeks ago about what a potential extension for Godchaux could look like. He opined the deal could be similar to that of tight end Hunter Henry. The proposal had the “new money” APY at $9.35 million. That means $18.7 million over two years. The proposal fell between the guaranteed money and the potential max for the actual extension.

Eleven Multi-Year Signings This Offseason
Eliot Wolf stated extending core players was part of “The Packer Way.” He hoped to bring to New England. In his short tenure atop the Patriots front office, he has already signed 11 players from the 2023 New England Patriots roster to contracts through the 2025 season or beyond. This began just before the start of free agency with the signings of Kendrick Bourne and Hunter Henry. The free agency period saw them bring back Mike Onwenu, Anfernee Jennings, and Kyle Dugger on multi-year deals.
Six players received contract extensions his summer. Christian Barmore got taken care of first. David Andrews, Rhamondre Stevenson, Jahlani Tavai, Jabrill Peppers, and now Davon Godchaux followed.
Noticeably absent from this list of contract extensions is linebacker Matthew Judon. The Pro Bowl pass rusher left practice on Monday. He was not seen at the team’s facilities on Tuesday. It remains unclear if or when he will return to training camp or how his situation will be resolved. Judon’s contract has one year remaining, which pays him $6.5 million.
The medical situation of Christian Barmore and his uncertain return made taking care of Davon Godcahux a more immediate need for the New England Patriots. They now have one more key core player locked up and one less unhappy camper.
