Patriots Daily: Return From COVID; Receiving Records

Welcome back, Patriots Football Now readers. Your loyal scribe has been laid out for most of the past week. I fought my first bout of COVID, after having dodged it for over four years. Fortunately, things have made a turn for the better and I’m finally up and about after a week off. I’ve spent vacation in more enjoyable ways than lying in bed, but the good news is that I’m back before the start of the New England Patriots 2024 training camp.



The Patriots were nice enough not to make any transactions while I was inactive. However, there have been a few noteworthy events while I was out of service. So, for the next 24 hours or so, there might be a few posts regarding last week’s news items. I appreciate the patience of readers while I get back up to full strength and up-to-date.

Upcoming coverage this week:

New England Patriots 2024 Training Camp – Veterans are scheduled to report tomorrow with the first public practice scheduled for Wednesday. PFN will keep folks posted on all of the happenings in Foxboro.

Patriots 90-Man Roster Spotlight series – Players will continue to be featured one at a time. Among the upcoming features are Sione Takitaki, Joey Slye, Daniel Ekuale, and Calvin Anderson.

Twelve Days of Tom Brady – The series will continue with articles featuring the GOAT. Next up: The 12 greatest Patriots players of all-time.

PFN will also keep everyone updated on the latest New England Patriots news and rumors. The Mid-Week Mailbag will also be making a return this week. The first preseason game (vs. Carolina Panthers) in only 17 days away. Time to get back to work!

Patriots 90-Man Roster Spotlight: Jahlani Tavai – A former second-round pick of the Detroit Lions, Tavai carved out a spot on the Patriots roster through his special teams player. He developed from a core special teams player to a core member of the New England roster, earning the 2023 Tom Brady Award as team MVP. Now he has a new extension that will keep him with the Patriots for the next few seasons.

Training Camp Competition: Patriots Running Backs – Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson are locks for New England’s 53-man roster. Last year the team only kept two running backs on the original roster. Will they do so again, or do Kevin Harris, JaMycal Hasty, Deshaun Fenwick, and Terrell Jennings have a shot at making the squad out of training camp?

Barmore Snubbed in Top Defensive Tackles Poll – ESPN polled NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, The goal of the exercise was to identify the Top 10 players at each position in the NFL. However, New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore got left off their rankings of the NFL’s top DTs.

Steelers Now – Derrick Bell projects the Pittsburgh Steelers 53-man roster before training camp gets underway. New quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields made the cut. Two former Patriots, Cordarelle Patterson and Elandon Roberts, are expected to stick with the Steelers as well.

NFL.com – Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love had a breakout season in 2023. He is not risking injury before inking a new contract. The QB will not practice until his new contract with the team is finalized.

CBS Sports – Shaqil Barrett signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason. The linebacker had spent his entire nine-year career in Tampa Bay, helping the 2019 Buccaneers win the Super Bowl. But this past weekend Barrett announced his retirement from the NFL.

Boston Bruins

Boston Hockey Now – Boston native and Boston University alum Matt Grzelcyk has moved on from the Boston Bruins. The defenseman looks to start over with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He hopes to prove he is healthy and can be a productive NHL player once again.
