Patriots Daily: Barmore Snubbed in Top Defensive Tackles Poll

The New England Patriots’ struggles in 2023 were no secret. The team finished 4-13. The winningest coach of the Super Bowl Era lost his job when the season was over. But there were some outstanding individual performances during a down year. New England received no representatives in the Pro Bowl, though at least four players had legitimate cases. Christian Barmore was among those with the strongest argument.
The defensive tackle had a career year in his third NFL season. Barmore recorded 64 tackles (39 solo) including 13 tackles for a loss. His 49 pressures consisted of 8.0 sacks, 34 hurries, and seven QB hits. Barmore batted five balls at the line of scrimmage. He also added a forced fumble and 40 stops. His performance earned him PFN’s 2023 Andre Tippett Award as the Patriots Defensive Player of the Year.
New England rewarded Barmore with a four-year contract extension worth up to $92 million. But not everyone was as impressed.
ESPN’s Top Defensive Tackles Poll
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported on a poll of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. The voters rank their top ten players at each position, with ESPN reporting on the results. In the ranking of the league’s top defensive tackles, Christian Barmore was left off the Top 10 list.

Barmore was listed among the honorable mention players noted. The “honorable mention” and “also receiving votes” players are not listed in alphabetical order, so it appears to be a continuation of the overall order. This means Christian Barmore ranked No. 16 overall. Each write-up was accompanied by a quote from one of the voters. Barmore’s read:
“A run-stopper with sack production and big upside. Can rush from the inside. Has some Chris Jones to him.” — NFC scout
Chris Jones, the man mentioned in Barmore’s assessment, took over the top spot from Rams’ legend Aaron Donald, who retired this offseason. Ravens DT Justin Madubuike was an honorable mention last year and shot up to No. 5 this year. If Barmore puts together another season like his 2023 performance, it is not difficult to see him following a similar path.
While he might remain overlooked in the eyes of some around the league, the New England Patriots are certainly glad to have Christian Barmore locked up for the foreseeable future.
