Patriots Daily: Sam Howell Endorses Brissett-Maye Combo
Sam Howell has a unique perspective on the New England Patriots quarterback room. In Howell’s final season at North Carolina, his backup was a true freshman named Drake Maye. In 2023 Howell was the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders. There, his backup was NFL veteran Jacoby Brissett. So Howell is quite familiar with both people. He believes they’ll make for a good combination in New England.
Mark Daniels of MassLive reported on the relationship between the three quarterbacks. He referred to Howell as Maye’s “best friend” in his article. But his former Tar Heels teammate isn’t the only Patriots QB Howell has great affection for.
“It’s funny that they get to work together now. Jacoby (Brissett) is someone who has meant so much to me,” Howell said. “And we were only together for that one year last year, but I call him one of my better friends. I couldn’t have asked for a better teammate. A better person to have in my corner. The thing about Jacoby is he’ll always have my back, he’ll always have Drake (Maye)’s back and I think they’re both really good teammates. They’re both really good people. They’ll do well together.”

Maye met Brissett last summer at a golf outing with Howell. “They’re great buddies, and Sam speaks so highly of him,” said Maye. “So, I got to meet Jacoby (Brissett) and I’m looking forward to getting in the same room again.”
With team chemistry, most notably on the offensive side of the ball and in the QB room, reportedly being an issue in 2023, the idea of a positive relationship between the veteran and rookie quarterbacks must be welcomed news to the ears of those in Foxboro. Whether that translates into success on the field remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an encouraging endorsement. Stay tuned.
