Last week the New England Patriots did a nice job working towards completing their 2024 coaching staff. But even after several hires, both new faces and old, there are still a few more spots to fill. And reports now indicate Will Lawing, the tight ends coach in New England last season, will be headed elsewhere.

Will Lawing is expected to join Bill O’Brien’s staff at Boston College. This comes as no surprise. When Lawing was discussed here as a candidate to return to his position, it was written at the time:

“Having coached alongside O’Brien at four different stops, it is likely that Lawing would join the staff at Boston College if O’Brien lands the head coach opening there.”

So, New England is still looking for a few more coaches. The running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends groups all need a coach. Tiquan Underwood has been hired as an assistant wide receivers coach, though there is no wide receivers coach for him to assist yet.

On defense, the Patriots could potentially add a defensive assistant. A special teams assistant is also likely in the cards. Troy Brown is one coach from the 2023 staff currently without a home to keep in mind for a return.

Football Fun Fact of the Day

Today is the birthday of Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss. He holds the NFL single-season record for touchdown receptions with 23 in 2007 as a member of the New England Patriots. Moss led the NFL in receiving touchdowns five times. Only Don Hutson (nine) and Jerry Rice (six) have done so more times.

Moss is also one of only three New England players to lead the NFL in touchdown receptions for a season. He did it twice (2007, 2009). The others are Stanely Morgan (1979) and Rob Gronkowski (2011).
