Patriots Daily: New England Hiring Defensive Line Coach

With their head coach and coordinators in place, the New England Patriots have turned their attention to filling out the rest of the coaching staff. On Sunday, it was reported the Patriots interviewed former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo about becoming an offensive assistant. Yesterday news broke that Jerry Montgomery is headed to New England to become their defensive line coach.
Montgomery had been the Packers defensive line coach since 2016. The past two seasons he also had the title of run-game coordinator. He survived Green Bay’s head coach change from Mike McCarthy to Matt Lefleur. He served under defensive coordinators Dom Capers, Mike Pettine, and Joe Barry. Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark both became Pro Bowl players under Montgomery’s watch.
Barry was fired as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator last month, replaced by former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley, who brought defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase with him from the school. Montgomery would replace DeMarcus Covington, who was promoted to defensive coordinator in New England.
Before joining the Packers, Montgomery had a successful college coaching career. His stops included Wyoming, Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma. He played college football for Iowa, where his head coach was former Patriots assistant Kirk Ferentz.
One thread emerging among the Patriots coaching hired, official or otherwise, is ties to Eliot Wolf. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, Ben McAdoo, and Jerry Montgomery were all assistant coaches in Green Bay when Wolf worked in their front office.
