The New England Patriots have head coach Jerod Mayo in place. However, the team has yet to announce any additions to his coaching staff. Although it has been widely assumed that DeMarcus Covington will be named defensive coordinator, there has been no official press release from the Patriots to confirm. They are also still searching for an offensive coordinator.

Two more names were added to the Patriots Coaching Staff Tracker yesterday for the offensive coordinator job. Klint Kubiak (49ers passing game specialist) and Scott Turner (Raiders pass game coordinator) were the latest names to join the fray. It is possible the jobs will not be filled until the two remaining head coach vacancies in Seattle and Washington are filled.

New England is at the point where they want to get the best possible candidate, but not lose out on other options while waiting to make a final decision. Stay tuned.

Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl Week

From an NFL Draft scouting perspective, the Senior Bowl is one of the biggest weeks of the year. Aside from the actual games, the Senior Bowl is second to only the NFL Combine and is more meaningful in many ways as there is actual football being played.

New England Patriots wide receivers and return specialist coach Troy Brown is the offensive coordinator for one of this year’s squads. It is unclear if Brown will be back in 2024, as Mayo remains the only confirmed coach on the staff to date.

This year’s roster features seven players who were featured in my latest mock draft. Several others are looking to work their way into the conversation. Patriots second-round pick Keion White was a Senior Bowl standout in 2023.

The East-West Shrine Bowl features fewer players expected to go in Round 1. But there are still quality draft prospects participating. Last season New England took Shrine Bowl player Atonio Mafi and DeMario Douglas in the draft. Four New England prospects are participating in this year’s game: WR Jalen Coker (Holy Cross), OG Christian Mahogany (Boston College), OG C.J. Hanson (Holy Cross), and LB Jackson Mitchell (UConn).

Fun Fact of the Day

Heisman Trophy winner Jaylen Daniels (LSU, 2023) is getting drafted by the New England Patriots in my latest mock draft. To date the Patriots franchise has had six Heisman Trophy winners play for them: Joe Bellino (Navy, 1960), John Huarte (Notre Dame, 1964), Jim Plunkett (Stanford, 1970), Doug Flutie (Boston College, 1984), Vinny Testaverde (Miami, Fla., 1987), Cam Newton (Auburn, 2010).
