The New England Patriots got help on Monday Night Football in terms of their 2024 NFL Draft selection. The Patriots have no plans to tank. That has been obvious throughout the season, even when wins were hard to come by. New England players were excited about winning in Pittsburgh. This reiterates how much success means to these players.

New England (3-10) has already been eliminated from the playoffs. There are four games remaining in the 2023 Patriots season. For fans cheering for a high draft pick in 2024, rooting for other struggling teams to win a few games is more fun than rooting for the Patriots to lose. Fortunately for their draft prospects, that is exactly what happened on Monday night.

Giants, Titans Both Win

With the New England Patriots recording their third win of the season this past week, their margin for staying near the top of the draft had decreased. The Carolina Panthers (1-12) remained in the basement of the NFL. Arizona Cardinals (3-10) and Washington Commanders (4-9) both had a bye in Week 14.. There were four teams with 4-8 records entering Week 14. Two of them (Chicago Bears and New York Jets) won on Sunday. On Monday Night Football the others won as well.

The New York Giants continued to win with UDFA Tommy DeVito at QB. The Giants are 3–1 since “Tommy Cutlets” became the team’s starting quarterback. New York got the ball back after a Green Bay touchdown with 1:33 remaining in regulation. They were training 22-21. New York drove down the field and set up a game winning 37-yard field goal by Randy Bullock as time expired.

Meanwhile in Miami, the Tennessee Titans pulled off the upset win over the Dolphins. Derrick Henry scored the winning touchdown with 1:53 to play in the fourth quarter. The Dolphins turned the ball over on downs when Tua Tagovailoa was sacked by Tennessee’s Harold Landry. It was Landry’s third sack of the night.

All four of the 4-8 teams won in Week 14, giving the New England Patriots a bit of breathing room to secure a high selection.

NFL Injuries in Week 14

As is the case every week in the NFL, there were some serious injuries in Week 14. Some of these included star players throughout the league:

QB Justin Herbert, Chargers (finger) – Expected to miss at least their Thursday Night Football game this week. Getting it examined this week to determine a plan. It is the index finger on Herbert’s throwing hand.

QB C.J. Stroud, Texans (concussion) – After having his head bounce off the turf, Stroud left with a head injury. He has been placed in concussion protocol. With every concussion being so different, it will be a wait and see approach.

RB Alexander Mattison, Vikings (ankle) – Left with an ankle injury after picking up 66 yards on 10 carries.

WR Justin Jefferson, Vikings (chest) – Returned from a hamstring injury only to be sidelined once again. Took a hit to the chest that ended up sending him to a local hospital. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said afterward that Jefferson did avoid anything significant.

WR Nico Collins, Texans (calf) – Exited the game with a calf injury after passing 1,000 receiving yards for the season.

LB T.J. Watt, Steelers (concussion) – Injured early in their TNF game against the Patriots. Played the rest of the game before being diagnosed with a concussion afterward.

DB Kyle Hamilton, Ravens (knee) – A non-contact injury to his knee forced Hamilton out of the game.

Other notable injuries include: WR Tutu Atwell, LAR (concussion); OT Jake Matthews, ATL (knee); OG Chris Lindstrom, ATL (ankle); DL Javon Hargrove, SF (hamstring); DL Jonathan Hankins, DAL (ankle); DE Will Anderson, HOU (ankle); RS Devin Duvarney, BAL (back)

Fun Fact of the Day

New England Patriots third of 2023 did not knock them out of the second position in the 2024 NFL Draft, but it did knock them out of the running for second worst season in franchise history.

The 1990 Patriots finished 1-15. Three teams have finished 2-14: 1970, 1981, and 1992. Because there are now 17 games in a season, the 2023 edition had a chance for the second worst record at 2-15, but that is now out of reach.
