Earlier this week, the New England Patriots lost a practice squad player to the Packers. Green Bay signed RB Patrick Taylor to their 53-man roster, leaving the Patriots with an opening on their practice squad. It is possible New England brings back a familiar face, such as DT Carl Davis, Jr. Former Patriots FB Jakob Johnson was just released by the Raiders, but it appears the Patriots are comfortable without a fullback in their current offensive system. Since practice squad players are often signed to future contracts with the team, it is something worth keeping an eye on.

Meanwhile, the Patriots have made David Andrews their nominee for the 2023 Art Rooney Award. The award, first given out in 2014, is voted on by NFL players, and given for, “great sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for opponents, and integrity in competition.” New England’s Matthew Slater won the Art Rooney Award in 2020. Only the Carolina Panthers have had multiple winners to date. Rooney’s own team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, has yet to have a player win the award.

Other past winners of the Art Rooney Award are: Larry Fitzgerald, Charles Woodson, Frank Gore, Luke Kuechly, Drew Brees, Adrian Peterson, Teddy Bridgewater, and Calais Campbell.

Fun Fact of the Day

As of today, the New England Patriots would be drafting third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, the Patriots have never drafted third overall. From overall seletion 1-to-32, the only slots the Patriots have never picked in are two, three, nine, and 20.

By contrast, they have selected at 21 overall five times: Tim Fox (1976), Daniel Graham (2002), Vince Wilfork (2004), Laurence Maroney (2006), and Chandler Jones (2013).
